ANDROID APP REVIEW AND TESTING – Apps2SD card

What is this app all about ?

Transfer apps to SD card

This app is pretty useful if your phone lacks internal memory and you have the option to get an external SD card mounted. Then you can move your apps from internal memory to SD card.

How to use the app ? (Ease of use score – 9/10)

Pretty straightforward to use, one you install appstosd,  go to your Settings -> Apps and open your desired app, (say airdroid), then there will be an option called Move to SD Card. Just touch on that and your application will be moved to SD card. See the below image for example.

Known Issues/Bugs ( Product stability score 7/10)

Well, there are many apps which are pretty heavy in memory and which you badly want to move to SD card in order to save internal memory. Some examples are facebook, whatsapp, Mail for exchange and some native Android/Google apps. Alas, Apps2sd can’t move those to SD card. Waiting for a day when almost all the apps can be moved to SD card.

Also, sometimes (this may be a problem with phone), the apps which are on SD card are sometimes invisible/not accesible. I have to restart my phone to see them again.

Size of app (Size score of 10/10)

The size of the app is 556KB.  (less than 0.5 MB), and this app can as well be moved to SD card. This app is very compact in size for what value add it brings to android users with low internal memory.

ANDROID APP REVIEW AND TESTING – NAVFREE USA

What is this app all about ?

GPS Navigation

NavFree

This application is helpful when you are an international traveller to USA and you do not have a GPS device or a data plan. This is one of the best offline GPS apps that I have used.  When I was in California, and I needed to drive around, I downloaded this app on my Android and then downloaded complete map of California while on wifi. After that I just started driving and this worked just like a normal GPS device. It gave accurate directions while going to many places (like Great Mall,  SFO airport, and even to friend’s addresses).

How to use the app ? (Ease of use score – 8/10)

I have pretty much described on how to use this app above. The usage is pretty much similar if you have used any other GPS app, (Garmin, Google Maps, etc). I have given it 9 out of 10 because sometimes it takes a while to start giving direction and I am already half way on my route. (May be it has to do with weak GPS signals at some places), but the app never gives a warning that Waiting for GPS, or GPS signal lost.    They probably need to do some work in that area.

Known Issues/Bugs ( Product stability score 8/10)

One of the issue is the issue described above. This app is still not a full fledged replacement of GPS devices like Garmin. If you have used Garmin, then you would know that whenever you are off track, Garmin would tell you recalculating and tell you the correct direction. But Navfree US will not tell you recalculating route if you miss an exit, although after a while it will recalculate.

Last Updated (Last updated score  10/10)

The last updated time on the website shows as  February 10, 2014 which is very recent. Seems like the app is in active development mode and continuous improvements are going on. So we have given a score of 10/10.

Size of app (Size score of 7/10)

The size of app is 33 MB and apart from this it all depends on where you want to travel. For example if you want to travel a lot in California, then you need to download the California map (which may be close to 150 MB ). So you need good amount of free space in your phone in order to use this app. The more maps you have downloaded for offline use, the more memory you would need.

Android App Review and Testing – AccuWeather

AccuWeather

What is this app all about ?

Weather Application

AccuWeather App

This application is helpful when you want to plan your day according to the weather conditions. For example, if you are planning to do any outside activity, you would be preferring no rains. This app predicts pretty well rains/temparate for coming days in a week. I have used it and found that the app prediction for next 4-7 days is fairly accurate (Perhaps it gets data from all weather channels/satellites).

How to use the app ? (Ease of use score – 9/10)

When you install this app from play store, the first time you run it, it will ask weather to use your current location or you can type your location. Choose the use your current location option. Make sure that at that you are connected to internet (by wifi or your phone data plan).  It will then open up and give you stats about temperature,  humidity, wind speed etc.  But people are not generally interested in current weather updates. They want to know the future.  For that you need to touch on hourly or daily option which is at top right.

Known Issues/Bugs ( Product stability score 7/10)

The first hiccup that we felt when starting this app for the first time is when the app asks us to type our location. When we typed our location, it could not search for the location. Then we chose our current location as option and the app worked.

Then the second issue we faced (won’t call it a bug), but AccuWeather needs to understand that the whole world does not run only on Fahrenheit. Many countries understand Celsius as temperature unit. If they can map cities to the temperature units, that would be great.

Right now if you want to change the units (say Fahrenheit to Celsius), you need to go to Accuweather Settings to change it. (in my mobile it was the bottom left button to open settings).

Size of the app comes to around 7.1 MB which is descent for this kind of app. So you can easily store it in your internal memory.

Android App review and testing – Super-Bright LED Flashlight

Super-Bright LED Flashlight

What is this app all about ?

This app is potentially

torch

replacing the torch that we used to have. If you are going trekking or visiting a village with poor lights, this is a perfect app to have.  Also it has a beautiful strobe function through which you can draw attention to yourself by continuous blinking of the light.

How to use the app ? (Ease of use score – 9/10)

howto

You can learn from the above picture. Once you open the app, there is a big switch near the bottom. Slide it up and your flashlight will be on.  To verify that it is on, just have a look at the back of your mobile and you would see the light on.

Then there is a strobe scroller at the top, scroll it towards right or left in order to increase or decrease the blink frequency.  Blink frequency is shown in the app and can vary from 0 to 9. (0 meaning  no blink and 9 meaning fastest form of blinking).  Since the app is pretty easy and straightforward to use, we have given it a score of 9 out of 10.

Known Issues/Bugs ( Product stability score 9/10)

The app claims that it has sound on/off feature but we could not find any when I downloaded the app in my phone. Anyways, we don’t see relevance of sound in a light app so we can categorize this issue as minor.  On app stability we score it 9/10.
